How to Decorate with Silver and Gray

Gray is a versatile and neutral color, which some people tend to think of as cold and harsh. In actuality, gray and silver (a lighter version of gray) are considered feminine colors and there are many ways to decorate with these shades.  Conversely, although gray and silver are traditionally thought of as feminine, they can certainly be utilized as masculine colors when implemented properly.

The trick to decorating with gray and silver is to use the correct shades and the right contrasting colors to make a well-rounded room that portrays the image and feeling you’re going for. For example, a silver rug with pale green accents around the room can evoke a peaceful feeling in a relaxed setting. Using carnation pink or even rose pink as accent colors around the room gives a feminine touch. Shades of lavender and violet, as well as blue, green, or even orange hues, will add dimension to a room where gray is the primary color. For a twist on traditional blue or green with gray tones, try off-white or teal blue. Gray doesn’t have to be boring as it can take the place of black décor in an Art-Deco inspired room, or be paired with pink instead of traditional black and red.

Using only gray and silver in a room will make it seem stark and cold. Add color in the wall paint or the draperies or other design elements you have in mind. A gray or silver rug are excellent ways to utilize these colors in your home décor. A silver rug with a bamboo print will look beautiful in a room with pale green walls or even pale silver walls with pale green trim or other décor. You can properly implement nearly any color along with gray; simply pick a color in the pattern of the rug and pull it out by coordinating the paint, trim or other elements of the décor in your space. Gray is a wise choice for high-traffic areas such as a family room or living room where children are usually present. Gray hides dirt and stains better than most colors and will certainly never go out of style in home décor.
