Bright colors can be intimidating when choosing home décor. We may love bright red or yellow, but wonder if we can pull it off in our space without it looking tacky. Here, we discuss various ways to decorate with bright colors.
Size Matters
Take into account the size of the room you are decorating. A small room may feel claustrophobic if it is done in one bright color so in this case, use neutrals in light tones, and paint one wall a bright color. For example, use beige and paint a single wall in the room orange and then use a modern orange rug, orange pillows and a few orange colored knick knacks, placed strategically around the room. Voila! You’ve just created a bright room without overdoing it.
Consider More than One Color
Another way to use bright colors is to choose more than one bright color that looks good with your base color scheme. For instance, in the beige and orange room example you could also use yellow, or bright blue accents. Use a printed wallpaper border with orange and yellow or orange and bright blue in the print. You could also try using a border which only contains the contrasting color and then use more pillows or an accent in the tiebacks on the drapes. This will make your room brighter without overdoing the color choices you made.
A Little Goes a Long Way
Just a small amount of bright color goes a long way in decorating, especially if the room is small or if the room is frequently brightly lit. Remember that bright colors reflect all the light in the room whether it is natural sunlight or artificial light. Use the bright colors in matte or eggshell finishes and try to stay away from shiny finishes on large surfaces such as walls, as it can make your bright décor look tacky instead of tasteful.
Bright colors can be fun and add a new dimension to your décor. Choose the right colors and finishes and don’t overdo the amount of bright color you choose for the room. Bright colors should not be relegated to clothing and sports cars and home décor is a wonderful place to show off your color coordinating skills. Whatever bright color you choose get yourself a rug and other small touches in that color, with a matching accent wall in the same color. Make sure you choose an appropriate finish and remember that it’s your space and decorating that space is where you get the chance to shine like a bright new penny!
